Having Breast Augmentation: The Mother’s Concern
Breast augmentation remains to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for women. It provides those women who want to improve their bust a more appealing form and shape. However breast augmentation not only appeals to younger women, but to moms as well.
We all know that natural process of aging changes our bodies in more dramatic ways than we expect. And motherhood can aggravate these changes, more specifically on the breasts. When women go through pregnancy there is a very high chance of their breasts sagging. This is because of the engorgement, the baby’s sucking and then let’s also factor in aging. Over time this transforms the breasts, from the once perky glands to something heavy and unflattering.
Women who are within 30-39 years of age make a third of those who have gone undergone breast augmentation in 2008 according to a report by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This age group is composed largely of mothers who want to improve their pronouncedly sagging breasts. They say that it’s not about increasing their breast size but more of regaining that shape and perkiness they had before pregnancy.

Some take the natural and less aggressive approach of exercising, but they deem this to be too mild to create dramatic changes. That is why they find breast augmentation or breast the right answer in producing faster and better results. Deciding to go through with the procedure not only improves their form but also the way these women feel about themselves because breasts also help define a woman’s persona.
However for those new moms who want to have the surgery, there are certain things that they have to consider. For instance, is it safe to have implants when you are breastfeeding?
There may be concerns that arise from having implants and breastfeeding at the same time. For instance, if you have silicone or saline implants your breasts may not be as sensitive as normal or it can go the other end and become very sensitive.
Another problem that may arise with having breast implants while breastfeeding is the breast becoming overly engorged, especially for those women who are producing so much milk. The breasts might also become vulnerable to infection or what is called mastitis.
Breast augmentation will also have the tendency to affect the production of milk. There are certain incisions that will prevent in disturbing the milk ducts. One incision approach that will fit breastfeeding moms is the one made through the armpit or under the breast. An areolar incision which is made on the border of the areola will is a big no-no because this portion is definitely teeming with milk ducts.
So to prevent any problems you need to talk to your surgeon and explain that you are planning to nurse your baby even after a procedure. Ask questions on how it is going to affect breastfeeding and the health of your baby. You also need to communicate with your child’s pediatrician for them to have a close follow-up on the level of nutrition your baby is getting and other possible nutrition plans should any problems arise with your milk production.
