The Latest on PIP Breast Implants
After months of scandal and media scrutiny, conclusive studies show a more positive result for women who had PIP breast implants. Studies revealed that the materials used in these implants, even if they are low grade, are not toxic and poses no threat to human health.
The controversy over PIP breast implants is that they were known to be made out of low-grade materials intended for manufacturing mattresses, instead of medical-grade ones. Numerous complaints were also made because of their high rupture rates.
To investigate on the problem, various tests were done in Britain, Australia and France. The results showed similar conclusions which claims that there is a negative link between these implant fillers causing genetic mutations or cell damage.
In a research done by a group of British experts headed by Bruce Keogh, who is the NHS (National Health Service) medical director, evidences show that PIP implants were highly likely to rupture compared to other brands.
The research also showed that they contain siloxicane, a chemical compound that is also used in consumer products such as antiperspirants, as well as hair and skin care products. They also added that it does not create any long term problems because they are not toxic.
They also discovered that the reason why PIP breast implants are more likely to rupture is because of poor manufacturing. Despite that negative conclusion, women who had these implants should be relieved because reports were simply blown out of proportion. Keogh further mentioned that the evidence showed no need for the implants to be removed for those that have not ruptured.
But just to make sure that the integrity of the implants remains intact, women should get follow-up check-ups with MRI scans for thorough assessment. This is important particularly for those who are experiencing signs of possible rupture such as asymmetry; lumpiness and soreness should immediately consult their doctor for proper consultation.

In 65 countries worldwide somewhere around 300,000-400,000 women received these substandard implants creating a massive alarm. But studies claim that all the negative hype only caused undue stress. If the implants rupture, they were found out that it causes only local reactions on some women. Only swollen lymph nodes and some tenderness can be felt but this doesn’t necessarily conclude any malignancy. That is why Keogh and his team stressed the importance of immediate consultation.
Another conclusion that the studies have reached is that PIP breast implants have a 15-30% chance of rupture after ten years, compared to the 10-14% with other brands.
But doctors say that all implants are high risk devices with a limited lifespan. That is why no matter what brand of breast implants there are, it is always important to monitor it regularly on your own or with a medical expert every year or two.
In conclusion, PIP implants are cleared from all previous misconceptions, but it still a fact that they are low-grade. This also brings to light the inadequacies when it comes to regulation in the manufacturing process.
Today the owner of the company, Mr. Jean-Claude Mas is now in prison and still awaiting trial.
