Rhinoplasty

(Nose Job)

Rhinoplasty is a nasal surgery that is consistently undertaken either as a facial plastic surgery or for the purpose of dealing with structural insufficiencies that may cause breathing problems. Most of our clients who have undergone the Rhinoplasty procedure have done so to improve their self-esteem along with remedy the problems of the facial functions.

The surgical treatment can consist of the enlarging or minimizing dimension of the nose, customize the idea or the bridge of the nose, transforming the nostril shape or also tightening the exact same. These being a delicate surgery, clients can be rest assured at Esteem Cosmetic Studio that Dr Jorge Lopez is highly qualified and experienced in this area. In fact, many would say that he is the Rhinoplasty Virtuoso in this area.

We get many emails from patients quite often asking how much the procedure would costs and many a times they tell us that the procedure would be fairly easy to do for example  “I just need a bit of the bridge shaven off, it’s really minor” If everything about the nose is that simple, then every surgeon should be able to perform this procedure well, infact, why not get your GP to perform this procedure??!!

When considering Rhinoplasty, you must first understand that Rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging and complex facial plastic surgery procedures. An experienced Rhinoplasty surgeon is one that is armed with a keen sense of artistic proportions, advanced surgical skills, and extensive experience with the way various nasal structures and tissues respond to surgical intervention, both immediately and with the passage of time.

Closed and Open Rhinoplasty

There are two basic types of rhinoplasty procedures. One is a Closed Rhinoplasty; Dr. Lopez performs almost exclusively closed rhinoplasty. With this procedure incisions are made inside the nose, to release the nose from its architectural framework, so that he can work on the tip cartilages, the cartilage in the mid-vault of the nose, the nasal bones and the septum.

The second rhinoplasty technique is called an Open Rhinoplasty, which requires and incision across an incision across the columella. This technique more often than not used in secondary rhinoplasties or when the anatomy of the nose is extremely complex.

Rhinoplasty Consultation

In the consultation with Dr Jorge Lopez, he will listen carefully to your concerns about your nose and arrive at the plan that is consistent with your desires and nasal anatomy. Dr. Lopez will explain in details the specifics of your anatomy and the procedure he will perform to best give you a nose that is has an “unoperated” natural appearance, functions well for breathing and gives you the shortest recovery period possible.

At your consultation, Dr Lopez will ask you to express concerns about the appearance of your nose and to describe your symptoms. Digital photographs of your face will be taken and Computer Imaging will be used to analyse the nose. This will enable you to view your current appearance and determine realistic outcomes following surgery.

Below is a list of all the different types of reshaping, which you may want or Dr Lopez may suggest:

  • Decreasing the overall size of the nose
  • Removal of bump on bridge
  • Narrowing a wide bridge
  • Refining and narrowing the tip
  • Adding ‘projection’ to the tip
  • Narrowing the nostrils and shortening the nose
  • Straightening the nose if crooked
  • Restoring height of the bridge following injury
    or previous surgery

Rhinoplasty Recovery – Healing After a Nose Job

Most patients wanting to undergo Rhinoplasty are also concern about how long it takes to heal and see  the final result. It is important to consider that with Rhinoplasty, there is short term healing – this is when we remove the internal and external splints and most patients are comfortable with returning to work with minimal visible swelling on the face.

There is also long term healing – where patients will see the final result of their nose in about 12 to 18 months post-surgery, why 12 to 18 months one might ask, the answer is simple – during this period subtle changes to the nose may still continue, while most external swelling may subside within the first 6 months, there is also internal swelling that takes a lot longer to subside.

If you are expecting a final result within 10 days, then in all probability you may not be ready mentally for this procedure. Rhinoplasty is one procedure where utmost patience is required where post-surgery healing is concerned.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

Will rhinoplasty hurt?

Not really. The procedure is done under either general or twilight anaesthesia, meaning you will not feel anything. Afterwards you can expect your nose to be sore for a week or two but not really painful.

How long does the surgery take and what kind of anaesthesia is used?

Usually, Rhinoplasty takes from one to three hours depending on the complexity of the condition of the nose.

Most patients have sedation prior to and during the procedure while some patients request a general anaesthesia. Nearly all rhinoplasty operations are done as outpatient surgeries.

Is there a lot of bruising afterwards and how long will it last?

This depends again on how complex the procedure is, but in general most patients experience five to seven days of purple discoloration and swelling around the eyes and upper cheeks. The nose itself will be swollen for around ten to fourteen days or longer, but subtle resolution of the swelling at the tip of the nose can take many months after surgery to go away.

What if I want to improve my nose, but I want to avoid an ‘operated’ look?

Well, you are like most people considering nasal surgery today. There was a time when the goals were to make every nose look like the ‘in vogue’ nose of the day…every nose was made smaller with a slight upturn.

Contemporary goals have evolved. Rhinoplasty should be an elegant procedure, which makes refinements in the nasal appearance. The strengths are preserved and the features in question are modified to bring harmony to the nose and thus the entire face.

The result is a natural nose, which complements the face.

I Have trouble breathing through my nose and have terrible sinus problems. Will my insurance policy pay for Rhinoplasty – nose job?

The condition described is usually associated with a deviated septum or a bent internal framework of the nose. Most of the time this results from trauma, such as a broken nose, but many patients with this condition cannot recall an episode where this might have occurred. The condition described in this question however, could also result from allergies or the two conditions can exist simultaneously. Careful examination is needed before surgery to separate the two conditions.

While individual insurance policies can vary, in general, functional surgery to improve breathing is considered a covered benefit in many group policies. If additional correction of a cosmetic deformity of the nose is done at the same time the cost of this part of the procedure is usually not covered by insurance.

Where are the incisions placed during nose surgery?

In general, most or all of the incisions in rhinoplasty are hidden in the inside of the nostril. While external incisions hidden in the creases where the nose meets the cheek can be used to narrow the nose, incisions on the bridge or tip are not usually used in cosmetic surgery of the nose.

Will my nose grow after surgery?

In general, our noses tend to elongate as we enter the middle years of our life and drooping of the tip of the nose can occur in the later years as elasticity disappears from the body.

While undergoing a cosmetic rhinoplasty as a teenager or young adult will not prevent the effects of aging on the nose, the final shape that results from this surgery is expected to last a lifetime and re-growth of bumps and deformities corrected by the operation is a rare occurrence.

How much does it costs?

Surgeon’s Fee (Dr Jorge Lopez) – $8,800.  Additional fees that would apply would be theatre fee and anaesthetist fee and any consumables such as nasal implants, fascia grafts etc. We will only be able to give you a quote once you have attended your consultation with Dr Lopez.
