What Are Fordyce Spots?

Fordyce spots are small, pale, or white-yellowish bumps that commonly appear on the shaft of the penis, scrotum, or even the lips and inside the cheeks. These harmless sebaceous (oil) glands are not associated with any disease, sexually transmitted infection (STI), or poor hygiene. They are simply a natural anatomical variation found in many individuals.

While Fordyce spots pose no medical risk, some men find them bothersome for cosmetic reasons or experience anxiety about their appearance, often mistaking them for a health issue.

Causes of Fordyce Spots

These spots occur due to the presence of ectopic sebaceous glands—oil-producing glands that develop in areas where they are not typically found. Unlike regular sebaceous glands, these lack hair follicles, causing oil buildup that leads to their characteristic appearance.

Fordyce spots are believed to be more noticeable due to factors such as:

  • Increased oil production in the skin
  • Hormonal changes, particularly during puberty
  • Genetic predisposition

Do Fordyce Spots Require Treatment?

Since Fordyce spots are not harmful, medical treatment is not necessary. However, for men who feel self-conscious about them, there are non-surgical options available to reduce their appearance.

Non-Surgical Treatment Option

Dr Matthew Holman uses the Agnes Laser machine. Agnes uses micro-insulated needles to target and destroy the gland (the Fordyce spot) while protecting the surrounding tissue. It’s a short, effective treatment, given the gland is just below the surface. After a few straightforward sessions, you’ll be free of those visible spots. No discomfort, at most only a few days of redness that reduces every day.

This treatment is the most favourable because it’s targeted, non-surgical and leaves no scars. Come in for a treatment and then, continue with your day.

When to See Dr Holman

If you notice any sudden changes in the size, colour, or texture of bumps on the penis, it’s best to consult a doctor. Fordyce spots are harmless, but conditions like genital warts, molluscum contagiosum, or pearly penile papules may look similar. A professional assessment can provide reassurance and guide the best course of action.

Fordyce spots on the penis are a common, benign condition that doesn’t require treatment. However, if their appearance causes distress, non-surgical options like laser therapy, or micro-punch excision can help reduce them. Consulting Dr Matthew Holman can help determine the most effective approach based on individual needs.
