breast implants for athletes - esteem

I am an Athlete, should my breast implants be placed over or under the muscle?

This is a very common question amongst our physically active patients. Surgery does not have a cookie-cutter formula, and it will all boil down to the individual. What physical activities do you undertake, and what is the anatomy of your breasts?

Suppose you are a bodybuilder, weight lifter, cross-fit enthusiast, or someone who mainly exercises their chest muscles. In that case, the implants will most likely be placed in a sub-glandular position (above the muscle). An under-the-muscle placement will increase the risks of implant displacement and implant animation, which creates a distorted appearance. However, an over-the-muscle arrangement will not alter the appearance of your chest when using the muscles.

If you are a marathon runner or someone who likes to run and jog, implants are best placed under the muscle. The chest muscles will provide extra cushion and give the breast more support. Runners must remember to wear a double bra for better support. ☺

Sometimes, anatomical limitations may require that your implants have a particular placement, regardless of your usual physical activities. If that is the case, you may be told to reconsider your plans and perhaps give us an idea of your regular activities, so we can plan accordingly.

As always, the best advice is to attend a consultation with a doctor who will be able to advise you on what is best for you. If you would like to discuss implant placement further, please do call Esteem Cosmetic Studio on 1300 378 336 or email us at info@esteemstudio.com.au.
