Did you know that you would need a certain kind of garment after surgery to heal faster and with better results?

In any liposuction clinic, doctors would advise you to wear compression garments to help your body heal with better contours and a more sculpted physique.

In liposuction, the fats that are suctioned off creates an extra space under your skin, if left just as is, you’d end up a big ball of saggy skin. This is where compression garments come in. They help compress the loose skin to help it follow the new shape of your body.

Compression garments also promote faster healing because it helps reduce swelling. The first 24 hours after surgery is where serum loss and lymphatic drainage happens, which then seeps into the empty spaces within your tissues. This, my friends, is what causes the swelling, and by wearing a compression garment, the swelling is reduced or prevented.

The limited mobility that you experience after surgery also predisposes you to swollen area, that is why pressure provided by compression garments is important.

Why do we really need to prevent swelling when it will just subside in a couple of weeks? If you just leave it be, you delay healing compromising yourself to bruising and infections.

You have to keep wearing them for a couple of weeks to months according to your doctor’s advice. Usually they would advise you to wear it 24 hours a day, every day for a specific number of months until you are fully healed.

You don’t have to worry on whether it might be bulky or uncomfortable, because these garments are made of light and stretchable materials. Once you wear them, it will just feel like a second skin or a well-fitted girdle, and you can wear them underneath any clothing.

There are also a variety of compression garments for different body parts. There is a chin, face and neck strap, arm sleeves, mid body compression, compression stockings (knee high or thigh high) and a full body compression garment.

A number of brands are already out in the market for you to choose, with some even classifying their garments according to the stage of recovery. They design it that tighter ones are for the early stage of recovery, to camisoles and girdles as you near healing.

Compression garments are more aptly considered to be undergarments rather than an outfit. That is why during the early stages of healing you might want to put on some sweatpants or sweatshirts, because they can be most comfortable. You wouldn’t want to add more pressure over the compression garment you wear underneath.

Tight fitting clothes might also put undue pressure to painful and treated areas, and can only delay healing and might affect the result of the surgery.

If you had an abdominal liposuction, you might need to wear pants that have garterized waists.

It is also advisable to wear button-down clothes instead of shirts or those that have to be tied at the back. The stretch and tensing could damage the scar tissue or disturb your healing wound.

For this critical time of reshaping your body, you just have to be patient and religiously wear your compression garments. Or modify your fashion statement a bit for a more comfortable and safer healing process. These will significantly help for a more desirable outcome of your liposuction surgery.
